Nantou Detention Center Cares for Local Students by Donating Scholarships to Support Disadvantaged Youth in Their Education
To embody the spirit of correctional institutions caring for the community and giving back to society, the Nantou Detention Center of the Agency of Corrections, Ministry of Justice, has actively promoted rehabilitation and the reintegration of inmates into society. In line with this mission, the center's Employee Consumer Cooperative has remained true to its commitment to public welfare by consistently supporting the educational needs of disadvantaged students in nearby schools. Each year, the Nantou Detention Center Employee Consumer Cooperative allocates special funds from its public welfare budget to donate scholarships for underprivileged students at nearby Jiahe Elementary School and Nangang Junior High School. This year was no exception, with three scholarships awarded to each school. Each selected student received a grant of NT$2,000 to help alleviate financial difficulties and support their continued education. This year’s donation was personally delivered by Cooperative Manager Mr. Lan Shih-Hsiung to both schools. The scholarships were received by Principal Mr. Chen Kuo-Chun of Nangang Junior High School and Principal Ms. Chen Hsiu-Ling of Jiahe Elementary School, who both expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the long-standing care and generosity shown by the Nantou Detention Center. The Nantou Detention Center stated that it will continue to uphold the philosophy of “taking from society and giving back to society,” making good use of cooperative resources to invest in local charitable causes. The event attracted enthusiastic participation from many inmates. On the competition stage, players exhibited intense focus, creating an atmosphere that was both tense and filled with camaraderie. This activity not only provided inmates a way to relieve stress but also enhanced their logical thinking and patience through the intellectual challenges of chess. The chess competition was conducted over multiple rounds, with each match serving as a test of intellect and chess skills. Inmates engaged in mutual learning and showcased their abilities, making the competition a stimulating exchange of ideas. Throughout the matches, participants demonstrated strategic planning skills and learned to think calmly while showing respect for their opponents. Ultimately, the detention center awarded prizes to the winners as recognition of their achievements. The director of the Nantou Detention Center stated that the goal of this chess competition was to offer inmates a healthy and positive activity platform, helping them cultivate patience and perseverance while fostering interaction and communication among them.
